Buchanan House is among the U.S. Naval Academy’s oldest and most visible landmarks. As the primary residence of the academy’s superintendent, the circa-1906, Beaux Arts-style home has hosted many academy receptions and events; and accommodates an extensive collection of art, antiques, and memorabilia. Preservation efforts included a detailed survey of the existing 34-room building and the careful selection of craftsman skilled in historic restoration and repairs. The project included architectural, structural, mechanical/electrical, and ADA upgrades, including repair of ten chimneys, restoration of historic fixtures, replacement of failing structural beams and masonry retaining walls, and repair of historic mouldings and woodwork.
