Tilden Middle & Rock Terrace Schools

Rockville, MD

Size:

242,000 SF

The Tilden Middle School and Rock Terrace School required a complex revitalization/expansion that collocated two schools on the site of the former Tilden Holding School. The existing facility was demolished and replaced with the new 244,560 SF, three-story structure organized in three main sections:

  • 168,804 SF Tilden Middle School is a comprehensive middle school with an initial capacity of 1,215 students

  • 60,534 SF Rock Terrace School serves 120 special education students ages 11-21

  • 15,223 SFof common activity and support spaces

While the two schools are collocated, they operate as separate entities and require individual identities. The design team accomplished this goal with distinct architecture for each school and separate, easily identifiable entrances that retain a unified composition by employing contrasting colors of masonry and metal panels. The two main entries form a cohesive design that enhances the neighborhood and respects the local context of the actively engaged community. Shared spaces in the center of the building promote staff collaboration and efficiency of building services. A clear pathway between the two schools allows students to move from one school to the other for specific programs.
