University Mall Shopping Center, which was originally constructed in 1977, was renovated and expanded from 138,000 SF to over 206,000 SF. Samaha’s proposed design transformed the aged shopping center into a fresh and colorful marketplace with four new pad sites and an expanded mall. The redesigned courtyard includes a fountain, sculpture, and outdoor dining. Shoppers also enjoy an expanded Giant® Food Store, an enlarged “mini-mall” lit by a skylight, and a new tower marking the south entrance. The transformed University Mall betters serves the community and rapidly expanding George Mason University population by creating a pedestrian friendly center with more shopping opportunities to serve the surrounding area.
